By now, the majority of us understand that Essential Oils are very, very powerful and should be a tool in our health toolbox.  But often, we are VERY overwhelmed by the number of oils and the cost of them!  Right?  I have an entire shelf in my bathroom for my essential oils.  Do I love them?  Yes!  Do I know how to use half of them?  No.

Essential Oils Made Simple with Recipes:

A
Acid Reflux – 
In a rollerball with any carrier; 8 drops Calm, and 4 drops Clarify.  Apply to abdomen and chest areas 2-3 times daily, and as needed.

Acne – 2 oz. Spray bottle with 15 drops Balance, 3 drop Clarify and 1 drop Calm in Plant-Based enzymes, Aloe Vera Juice, or Aloe Vera Gel (use pump top). Apply twice daily.

Adrenal Exhaustion Roll-on – .33 oz. of an unscented carrier oil (liquid, oil or gel) with 8 drops Lift, 5 drops Balance, and 2 drops Clarify. Use 3-5 times daily and as needed when fatigued and exhausted.

Adrenal Support – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 8 drops Calm, 8 drops Lift, and 4 drop Clarify. Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed.

Allergies – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 15 drops Balance, and 5 drops Clarify. Use as needed.

Alzheimer’s – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 12 drops Balance and 8 drops Clarify.  Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed.

Antiseptic Mouth Wash (By Kristine Guidry Devillier) – 1 oz. Enzymes Spray, 1 oz. Silver Supplement, 5 drops Balance, and 4 drops Lift.  Mix in a 2 oz. colored bottle. Swish well around mouth. DO NOT SWALLOW

Anxiety – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 15 drops Lift, and 5 drops Calm.  Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed.

Athlete’s Foot (foot fungus) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 14 drops Calm, 4 drops Balance, and 4 drops Clarify. Use 2-3 times daily, and as needed.

B
Bites (Deer tick bite) (By Valerie Rickard Bledsoe) – Apply 1-2 drops Balance, directly on bite area. 3 times daily, and as needed.

Bladder issues/Spasms – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 12 drops Calm, and 8 drops Balance. Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed.

Blood Pressure – In a rollerball with carrier; 8 drops Balance, and 4 drops Calm. Apply to pulse points several times a day.

Boils – 1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 2 SolleMegas (opened up and mixed in) with 6 drops Lift, 3 drops Balance and 2 drops Calm. Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed.

Bone Spurs – 2 oz. carrier oils of Castor, Avocado, Rosehip, Evening Primrose and/or Plant-Based enzymes with 10 drops Clarify, 6 drops Calm and 4 drops Balance.  Apply 3 times daily. To enhance formula, add in 3 SolleMegas and 3 Verdeymes (open capsules).

Bowel issues (Crohn’s, IBS, Constipation) – 1 oz. carrier oil, Liquid Plant Enzymes, or SolleFlex AC Cream, 6 drops Balance and 6 drops Calm.

Bruises – 1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 8 drops Balance and 2 drops Clarify.

C
Canker Sores / Cold Sores – 
1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream (or Oil; Castor, Avocado, Rosehip), 3 drops Lift, 2 drops Clarify, and 2 drops Balance. To enhance, add in Aquasol silver gel.

Candida – 2 oz. Plant-Based enzymes or Coconut oil with 12 drops Calm, 4 drops Balance and 4 drops Clarify. Apply to affected areas or digestive area, 3 times daily. To enhance formula, add in 2 capsules of Probio IQ.

Chronic Fatigue – 2 oz. Spray with Nature’s Fresh Enzymes, 2 droppers Silver Shield Liquid, 2 Droppers Find Strength FES, 12 drops Lift, 4 drops Balance, 3 Drops Clarify, 2 drop Calm.  Mix together, shake well and spray around you 5-6 times daily.

Cold & Flu – 1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream with 6 drops Clarify, 4 drops Balance and 2 drops Lift. Use 3-5 times daily and as needed on chest, feet and sinus areas.

Congestion (Head, Nasal) – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 20-22 drops Clarify.

Constipation – 1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, with 8 drops Calm and 2 drops Clarify. Use 3-5 times daily, and as needed, by massaging onto abdomen area after each meal.

Essential Oils Made Simple

D
Diabetes – 2 oz. Spray with Plant-Based Enzymes, 14 drops Lift, 4 drops Balance, and 3 Drops Calm.  Mix together, shake well and spray around you 3-4 times daily.

Digestion (Gas, Bloating, Indigestion) – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 15 drops Clarify and 5 drops Lift.

E
Earaches – 1 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream with 1 dropper Silver Shield Liquid, 6 drops Calm, 2 drops Balance and 1 drop Clarify.  Mix together and massage around ears 2-3 times daily and as needed.

Eczema – 2 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, with 1 dropper Silver Shield Liquid or Gel, 10 drops Calm, 10 drops Balance and 1 drop Lift.  Apply 3-4 times daily and as needed.

Energy (Energize, Re-energize and Dispel Negative Energy) – 2 oz. carrier with 5 drops each Balance, Calm, Clarify and Lift.
Exercise Recovery – In a 2 oz. spray bottle with liquid plant enzymes, 12 drops Clarify, 10 drops Balance. Spray muscles and affected areas as needed.

Eyes (Chronic Dry Eyes) – 2 oz. carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 5 drops Balance, 3 drops Calm, 4 drops Clarify. Apply 2-3 times daily over kidney region and reflexology points.

F
Fatigue – 
In a rollerball, or spray with carrier; 5 drops Lift and 5 drops Clarify.

Feet, Dry – 2 oz. of Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, or Avocado oil with 12 drops Balance, 6 drops Clarify and 3 drops Calm. To enhance blend, add in 6 SolleMegas.

Female Issues – 2 oz. of Coconut Oil or Liquid Enzymes, with 12 drops Balance, 6 drops Lift and 2 drops Clarify. To enhance blend, add in 6 SolleMegas.

Fever – On a cold, wet cloth, add 2-4 drops Clarify.  Apply to back of neck, temples and forehead, crease of arm, under armpit and bottoms of feet.

Fibromyalgia – 2 oz. Plant-Based enzymes with 10 drops Lift, 5 drops Clarify, 4 drops Calm and 2 drops Balance.  Apply 3-6 times daily and as needed.

G
Gall bladder –
 2 oz. Castor oil, Sesame Oil or Olive Oil (or 1 0z. lemon juice and 1 oz. aloe vera juice for a spray) with 8 drops Clarify, 8 drops Calm and 5 drops Balance.

Gout – 2 oz. of coconut oil or Plant-Based Enzymes with 8 drops Lift, 6 drops Clarify, 4 drops Balance and 2 drops Calm. Apply to affected area 3-4 times daily, and as needed. DO NOT apply to an open wound.

Grief – In a 2 oz. spray bottle of Liquid Plant-Based Enzymes, 14 drops Lift, 4 drops Clarify, 4 drops Balance.

H
Hair Loss/Thinning – 

– For a 4 oz. Spray; 3.5 oz. Liquid Plant Enzymes, add .25 oz. Aloe Vera Gel, .25 oz. Argan oil, 12 drops Balance, 12 drops Clarify and 6 drops Lift.

– In an 8 oz. Shampoo Base; add in 22 drops Balance, 22 drops Clarify and 10 drops Lift.

Headaches – In a rollerball; Plant-Based Enzymes, jojoba oil, hemp oil or almond oil with 5 drops Clarify and 5 drops Balance. Apply to lymphatic areas 2-3 times daily, using small circular motions towards the heart.

Hormone Headache – In a rollerball; Plant-Based Enzymes or Evening Primrose oil with 8 drops Balance, 2 drops Calm, and 1 drop Clarify.

Heart (By Valerie Rickard Bledsoe) – In a rollerball; Plant-based enzymes, Aloe Vera Gel or Apricot Oil with 8drops Balance and 2drops Lift. Apply over the heart and thyroid areas 2-3 times daily.

Hemorrhoid – .25 oz. Golden Salve, .25 oz. Black Ointment and .5 oz. Aloe Vera Gel with 6 drops Balance, 2 drops Clarify and 1 drop Calm. Apply to affected area 3-4 times daily. To enhance, open up SolleMegas and/or SolleFlex and add to recipe.

Herpes – 2 oz. of Coconut Oil, Rosehip Oil or Plant-Based Enzymes with 10 drops Lift and 10 drops Clarify. Apply to affected area 3-4 times daily, and as needed.

Hip Pain (By Wendy Zufall Turner) – 2 oz. of Grape seed Oil with 12 drops Balance and 8 drops Calm Apply to affected area 3 times daily, and as needed.

In 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 10 drops Balance, 8 drops Clarify and 4 drops Calm.

Hot flashes / Night Sweats (By Betty Runkle) –
– 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 10 drops Calm and 10 drops Balance. Apply before bed.
– 2 oz. Plant-based enzymes, 10 drops Balance, 6 drops Clarify, 4 drops Calm.

I
IBS – 
(See Bowel)

Immunity (including WBC) – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 10 drops Clarify and 10 drops Lift. Apply around you 2-3 times daily.

Insect Repellent – 2 oz. of Liquid Enzymes, with 10 drops of Coconut Oil, 10 drops Clarify and 6 drops Balance and 4 drops Lift. Apply around you as needed.

Injury (I.E., Bump Head, Bones, Muscles, Joints) – 2 oz. of a carrier (liquid, oil or gel) with 8 drops Balance, 8 drops Calm, and 4 drops Clarify.  To enhance the recipe, you can add in 2 droppers of Distress Remedy.

Insomnia – 2 oz. of a carrier (Liquid Plant Enzymes or Water), 15 drops Calm and 5 drops Balance.  Spray around you, on linens, and pajamas before bed.

J 
Jock Itch (Itch, Discomfort) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut Oil and/or Aloe Vera Gel with 14 drops Calm and 6 drops Balance. Apply to affected area 2-3 times daily.

K
Kidney’s (Pain, Stones) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut Oil or Aloe Vera Gel with 8 drops Calm, 8 drops Balance, and 4 drops Clarify. Apply to affected area 2-3 times daily.

L
Legs (Leg cramps) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut Oil or Aloe Vera Gel, with 12 drops Calm, 4 drops Balance, and 4 drops Clarify. Apply to affected area 2-3 times daily, using small circular motions towards the heart.

Libido (Libido/Sensuality) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut Oil or Aloe Vera Gel, with 12 drops Lift, 8 drops Balance, and 4 drops Calm. Apply to reproductive areas, and reproductive reflexology areas.

Liver (Hep C) – 2 oz. Avocado or Sesame Oil, with 20 drops Clarify. Apply over the liver, and bottoms of feet, 2-3 times daily.

Lymph (Lymphodema) – In a rollerball; Plant-Based Enzymes, jojoba oil, hemp oil or almond oil with 10 drops Clarify and 2 drops Lift. Apply to lymphatic areas 2-3 times daily, using small circular motions towards the heart.

M
Massage – The Balance would be nice with either a drop of Clarify (muscle and joint support) and/or Calm (anti-inflammatory).

Memory Booster – In a rollerball; 12 drops Clarify. Apply to temples and pulse points.

Migraines – In a rollerball; Plant-Based Enzymes, Hemp Oil, or Apricot oil, with 10 drops Clarify and 2 drops Calm. Apply to temples, base of neck, occipital region and wrist areas as needed.

Mood Enhancer – In a rollerball with carrier; 6 drops Lift and 6 drops Balance. Use when you wake up, before bed, and several times throughout the day.

Muscles (Sore, Aching, Overuse) (By Chris Hedrick) –
– SolleMuscle Bath Soak – 2 cups Epsom Salt with 5 drops Balance, and 10 drops Calm. Soak in warm water for at least 15 minutes, then air dry.
– SolleMuscle Relief Spray – 2 oz. Plant-Based enzymes, oil, or lotion, with 10 drops Balance and 10 drops Calm. Generously apply to sore muscles.

– SolleMuscle Roll on (By Mary Lou Carpenter) – In a rollerball with any thin carrier; 4 drops Clarify, 4 drops Lift, and 4 drops Balance. Apply to sore muscles as needed.

N
Nail Fungus – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes or Coconut Oil, with 15 drops Calm, and 5 drops Clarify. Apply to affected area 3-5 times daily.

Nausea – In a rollerball with a carrier; 10 drops Clarify and 2 drops Lift.
– In a Nasal Stick with 6 drops Clarify, and 1 drop Lift.

Neuropathy (Nerve Pain) – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes or Rosehip Oil with 7 drops Calm, 7 drops Balance, 7 drops Clarify, and 3 drops Lift. Apply to affected area 3-5 times daily.

Nightmares – 2 oz. Liquid Plant Enzymes, 12 drops Balance, and 8 drops Calm.

P
Panic Attack – In a rollerball; 6 drops Lift, 2 drops Calm, 1 drop Balance.

Parasites – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes or Almond Oil, with 12 drops Calm, 4 drops Lift, and 4 drops Clarify. Apply to abdomen area 3 times daily, and rectum before bed.

Perfume – Depends on the scent a person is going for.  Use the blend descriptions to guide your formulation. In a .33 oz. roll-on; 6 drops Dominant Note, 4 drops Under Note in a base of oil or liquid enzymes.
– Spicy – Lift                                                   – Floral – Balance
– Earthy & sweet – Calm                             – Camphoraceous – Clarify

Poison Ivy – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut, Hemp and/or Apricot oil, with 10 drops Calm, and 8 drops Balance.  Apply 3-5 times daily. Optional: 3 drops Lift.
 Bath Soak – 1 cup ground up oats with 1 cup almond milk, 5 drops Calm and 3   drops Balance. Soak in cool-warm (not hot) water for 5-10 minutes, then air dry.

Pregnancy – Use safety precautions with all pregnancies, especially high-risk.
Use small quantities during the 1st and 2nd trimester. The balance would be best.
– Clarify for nausea and immune support (light diffusion) as needed (but not for long periods of time. Calm to calm nerves and enhance sleep (light diffusion).
 – Avoid Lift blend, (Cinnamon can have blood thinning properties, avoid especially with c-section possibility).- Use and Application – Use in a well-ventilated area
*1% or less dilution ratio (i.e., 5-10 drops total in a 2 oz.)
*Avoid applying to reproductive areas and reproductive reflexology points

S
Scar Cream – 2 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 10 drops Balance, 10 drops Calm, and 2 drops Clarify.

Sciatica – 2 oz. Liquid Plant Enzymes, or SolleFlex AC Cream, with 12 drops Balance, 8 drops Calm, 2 drops Clarify.

Shingles – In a 4 oz. spray bottle, base of liquid plant enzymes, 14 drops Lift, 16 drops Balance, 6 Clarify. Apply to the affected area at least 3 times daily and as needed.

Sinus – In 2 oz. carrier, 10 drops Clarify, and 5 drops Balance.

Skin – In 2 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 8 drops Balance, 6 drops Calm, 4 drops Clarify, 2 drops Lift. Apply at least 3 times daily and as needed.

Sleep – In an Ultrasonic Diffuser, 5 drops Calm, and 5 drops Balance. Diffuse first 30 minutes of going to bed.
– 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, Coconut Oil, Hemp oil, or Apricot Oil with 10 drops Calm and 8 drops Balance. Apply before bed.
– Congestion inhibiting sleep: for diffusion, add in 1 drop Clarify to Diffusion recipe; and 2 drops Clarify to the topical application recipe.

Sprain – 2 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 10 drops Balance, 6 drops Clarify, 4 drops Calm.

Stress – In a rollerball; any carrier with 15 drops Lift, 5 drops Calm, and 1 drop Clarify. Use as needed.

Stretchmarks – 1 oz. Rosehip Oil, 1 oz. Evening Primrose Oil, with 20 drops Balance and 2 drops Clarify. Apply to affected areas 3-5 times daily.

Sunburn – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes, 4 droppers Silver Shield with 8 drops Balance and 12 drops Calm.  Apply to affected areas 3 times daily, and as needed.

T
Thyroid Support – In a rollerball; Hemp Oil, Avocado Oil, or Evening Primrose Oil.  8 drops Lift, 1 drop Calm, and 3 drop Balance. Apply to thyroid region 3 times daily.

Travel Support – 2 oz. spray with plant based enzymes, 2 droppers Silver Shield liquid, 2 droppers Distress Remedy, 5 drops each of Balance, Calm, Clarify and Lift. Mix up, shake well, and use several times a day during travel. Helps to lift mood, boost immunity, disinfect hands and surfaces.

U
Ulcer – 2 oz. Avocado Oil, Almond Oil, or Hemp Oil, with 10 drops Clarity and 10 drops Calm.  Apply topically to abdomen area 3 times daily, and as needed.

Urinary (Including Bedwetting) – 2 oz. Plant-Based enzymes or Coconut Oil, with 12 drops Balance, 6 drops Calm and 2 drop Clarify. Apply to urinary regions 3 times daily, and as needed.

V
Veins (Spider, Varicose) – 2 oz. Rosehip Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Coconut Oil and/or Hemp Oil, with 8 drops Calm, 8 drops Clarify and 8 drops Lift.  Apply to affected areas 3 times daily.

Vertigo  2 oz. SolleFlex AC Cream, 8 drops Balance, 8 drops Clarify, 3 drops Calm, and 2 drops Lift. Apply to temples, wrists, and pulse points as needed.

W
Warts – In a serum with 1 oz. Coconut Oil, 1 oz. Castor Oil, 16 drops Lift, and 4 drops Balance.  Apply directly to area at least 3 times daily.

Weight loss – In a rollerball; Coconut Oil with 10 drops Lift, 1 drop Calm, and 1 drop Clarify. Use 3 times daily, and when you have appetite cravings.

Y
Yeast Infection – 2 oz. Plant-Based Enzymes with 20 drops Calm and 2 drops Balance. Apply to affected area 3 times daily.

Side Note: A few things to consider when people are using Calm SE Blend. It is a powerful antifungal, anti-candida and anti-parasitic. Some people may experience nausea and fatigue with use. This may be an indicator that the blend is too strong, as the response with use is to combat fungus and parasites. If this occurs, decrease the dilution ratio. Also, if the lymphatic system is congested and/or the eliminative channels are not function optimally, these responses can occur. You may have to start out with a “weak” diluted recipe and increase the amount of drops gradually over a several week period. In addition, adding in 1-2 drops Lift and 1-2 drops Clarify to the Calm blend mentioned above would also be helpful, if nausea occurs.

BLENDING GUIDELINES

1 oz. = 10-12 drops total in a carrier

4 oz. = 18-22 drops total in a carrier

4 oz. = 28-34 drops total in a carrier

8 oz. = 48-60 drops total in a carrier

* Bath Salts may require fewer drops, so start with a smaller amount and add to it if needed.

CARRIERS & BASES

Carrier oils are used to deliver essential oils to the skin when they cannot be used neat. They help the essential oil nutrients penetrate the skin and membranes, without irritation, or congesting receptor sites. Massage oils such as almond, apricot and grapeseed are fat soluble and are a great source for moisture and nourishment to the skin.

Carrier Oil Storage and Shelf Life:

Carriers ideally should be kept in the refrigerator or stored in a dark cool area to prolong their shelf life. They oxidize at a faster rate when exposed to heat and light. Most carriers have a six to nine-month lifespan before turning rancid and losing their therapeutic value. You want to avoid direct sunlight, high humidity and temperatures above 72° F as these could also destroy the therapeutic properties of the oils.

  • SolleFlex AC Cream is light to medium, non-greasy, odor & residue free therapeutic cream which absorbs easily into the skin. Wonderful for pain, inflammation, swelling, puffiness, stiff or sore muscles/joints, neck tension and headaches.
  • Almond, sweet (Prunus amygdalus, P. dulcis) is light to medium, non-greasy and absorbs easily into the skin.
  • Aloe Vera (Aloe vera) is light, cool, refreshing and healing to the skin. It is widely used for cuts, burns, inflamed skin and wound healing.
  • Apricot Kernel (Armeniaca vulgaris, Prunisarmeniaca) is a very fine and light oil that provides hydration and soothes dry, damaged and mature skin. It is high in vitamin A & B which help in cell repair and rejuvenation.
  • Avocado Oil (Perseaamericana, Perseagratissima) is a heavier oil with a deep green color that is rich in vitamins and nutrients. It is often used in products for dry scalp, damaged hair and skin problems such as eczema and dehydration.
  • Black ointment is a drawing salve composed of several herbs such as chaparral, comfrey and lobelia. It is used to pull out splinters, warts, cysts, combat bacterial infections, and helps to heal hemorrhoids. There are several brands or you can make your own using beeswax, olive oil and herbal tinctures and/or extracts of pine tar, chaparral, chickweed, comfrey, goldenseal, lobelia, marshmallow, mullein, red clover and/or myrrh gum.
  • Golden salve, made up of several herbal extracts, offering antiseptic and disinfectant properties. This formula helps expedite wound healing, cuts, burns, bruises, yeast infections, diaper rash and cold sores. Not recommended for deep wounds or cuts. There are several brands or you can make your own using beeswax, olive oil, and herbal tinctures and/or extracts of plantain, comfrey, chickweed, black walnut hulls, goldenseal, lobelia, mullein, marshmallow, myrrh gum, yarrow and/or white oak bark.
  • Grapeseed Oil (Vitisvinifera) is a fine, light, non-greasy and fast-absorbing. It is hypo-allergenic and good for babies. It is an excellent choice for those whose skin does not absorb other oils very quickly.
  • Jojoba (Simmondsiasinensis, Buxuxsinensis) is actually a liquid wax, not an oil. It is best used to moisturize and re-hydrate skin and to balance dry and oily skin patches. A good quality jojoba oil will solidify in fridge.
  • Olive Oil (Olea europaea) is a semi-heavy oil that provides hydrating, nourishing and moisturizing benefits. The highest quality olive oil is the “extra virgin” as this is obtained from the first pressing and has the most vitamins and nutrients.
  • Sea Salts are very mineralizing to the skin. They offer nourishment and help remove toxins and dead skin cells. It is best to find a supplier that obtains their salt from an environmentally safe and reputable location.
  • Coconut Oil (Cocos Nicifera) is thick and can sometimes be too heavy for the pores. Unfractionated coconut oil is the best to achieve therapeutic benefits.
  • Pau d’Arco Lotion, made from an herbal extract, offers antifungal and antibacterial properties while helping irritated skin, itching, dry and scaly skin. there are several brands of pau d’ arco lotion or you can make your own using an infusion of pau d’arco tea and an unscented botanical lotion base.
  • MSM Cream helps to drive blends deeper into the skin while helping to restore balance and strength to muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

Essential oils are approximately 100 times more potent than their actual herb form. Although pure essential oils are extractions from a natural substance, they can still be dangerous and harmful if proper precautions and education are not exercised. There are several factors to consider before using essential oils, such as age, health condition, sensitivities and allergies, essential oil quality, essential oil chemistry, dilution ratios and application methods.

JennScents, Inc. adopts the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) and International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA) safety guidelines for general, pregnancy, eye and dermal safety. Essential oils interact within the body in three ways – physiological, psychological and biochemical. Physiologically, they have an effect on body functions. Psychologically, when we smell a scent, the limbic system is activated, thus triggering chemical and neurotransmitter responses that can affect, adjust, shift and inspire mood and behavior. (Buchbauer, 1993; Johnson, 2011; Shibamoto et al, 2010). Biochemically, when essential oils are metabolized in the bloodstream, they interact with enzymes, hormones and other processes.

General

  • Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children, pets and those with cognitive impairments and deficiencies.
  • Essential oils are not water-soluble, they are fat-soluble.  This means that the essential oils will not mix or disperse in water but will mix with carrier oils (Olive, Grapeseed, etc.).
  • Most essential oils require a carrier and should not be used directly on the skin. For those essential oils that are being used neat, test patch on the skin before use on a large area.
  • Keep a carrier close by when blending or using essential oils on the skin.  If there is an irritation, you want to dilute it in a fat soluble base such as Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil or Milk.
  • If you are working with someone who has high blood pressure, avoid “heating” or “stimulating” essential oils such as Thyme, Rosemary and Oregano as they may increase blood pressure. Ylang ylang is a good choice for those with hypertension.
  • If you have or you are working with someone who has a serious health condition such as heart disease, have them consult their physician before using any essential oils.
  • Use caution with essential oil exposure during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester and high-risk pregnancies. According to the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (www.IFPAroma.org), certain essential oils are contraindicated due to the nature of their chemical components, which may be too strong (and unnecessary) for a pregnant client, bearing in mind that the skin and placental barrier are more delicate and sense of smell more heightened. The few essential oils I feel comfortable using are Lavender, Chamomile, Frankincense, Patchouli, Citrus Oils and Peppermint for nausea in a very small amount.
  • Citrus essential oils are photosensitive (phototoxic). This means that they may cause pigmentation and discoloration to the skin when exposed to direct sunlight within three to four hours after topical application. Therefore, avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds after topical use of these oils.
  • Internal use is a very important topic. One should only consider this application when working with a highly trained, professional Aromatherapist. Much education and training should be employed as large amounts can be intoxicating, harmful and disturb internal membranes. Some essential oils should never be ingested due to their toxicity on organs, especially with certain medical conditions.
  • Essential oils are highly flammable substances and should be kept away from direct contact with flames, such as candles, fire, matches, cigarettes, and gas cookers.
  • Only use 100% pure essential oils from a reputable and experienced company.

Contraindications & Toxicity

These contraindications should be considered with everyone experiencing some type of health concern. These precautions are not to alarm you, but rather educate you on proper and responsible use and employment of aromatherapy.

  • Those with serious health conditions such as Cardiovascular and Neurological issues, should consult their physician and pharmacist before beginning any essential oil therapy for possible interactions.
  • Avoid sunlight exposure after topical use of citrus essential oils to avoid skin irritations and pigmentation.
  • Those taking blood thinner medications should use caution with essential oils such as Cinnamon, Sage and Hyssop. Thyme essential oil may slow down blood clotting.
  • Asthma may be induced by certain essential oils such as Thyme. Also, do not use steam inhalation, as the heat and steam may aggravate the mucosal membranes.
  • Some oils should be avoided with Epilepsy such Fennel, Sage, Rosemary, Camphor and Hyssop.
  • As a precaution, those with estrogenic cancers may want to avoid certain essential oils with Estrogenic mimicking properties such as Geranium, Rose and Clary sage.
  • Those taking Statin medications should avoid essential oils that could cause Hepatotoxicity, especially ingestion, such as Pennyroyal, Thuja, Anise, Clove and Wintergreen.
  • Those with liver disease should use caution with essential oils that are Hepatotoxic such as Anise, Basil, Bay Laurel, Cinnamon, Clove, Fennel, Nutmeg, Oregano, Tarragon and Thyme.
  • Pine is contraindicated with significant prostate concerns.
  • Those taking acne medications should avoid topical use of citrus oils on their skin.
  • Nephrotoxic oils should be avoided with those experiencing kidney and renal failure, such as Bay Laurel, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Juniper, Sandalwood and Pine. Small quantities should only be diffused for a short period of time.
  • For those with Glaucoma, caution should be used as some essential oils may raise intraocular pressure such as Cypress, Hyssop, Tarragon and Thyme.
